INGREDIENT TRANSLATIONS LIST (IN CRÉOLE TOO)

Check out our Mauritian ingredients translation lists that covers English, French, Créole, Hindi and even some Hakka. I created it because I needed a quick reference list that I pull on my phone when I am cooking or grocery shopping. The translations did not use to come to me naturally when I first came to the United States. I am sharing them here because I figured someone else might need it too. If you are not quite sure how to call our beloved sou sou in English or what patol translates to in French, then you definitely need to check out the list!

    INGREDIENT GLOSSARY AND HISTORY SNIPPETS

Be sure to also check our Mauritian ingredients glossary page that also has history snippets. It offers a brief overview of common ingredients used in Mauritian cuisine along with some history snippets that go with them.

    THE MISSION

I have been wanting to have a place on the web where I can document all my authentic Mauritian recipes for quite a while now. I simply love cooking and I cook very often, pretty much every day. I have friends who ask me for recipes. If you know Mauritians well, you know that we sometimes do not give exact measurements because everything is in our head and we cook by feel. That is not always helpful for the person who is trying to create a recipe that you verbally shared with them. They will not be able to scratch the Mauritian food craving itch since, very likely, the recipe will not turn out.

While I do tend to write down most of my recipes, they are not exact measurements or steps, because I already how to make them. So this blog is here to be a place where I can share authentic Mauritian recipes with all of you missing Mauritian food, whether you were born there and do not get a chance to visit often, or you have been there on vacation and miss the wonderful meals you had on the island.

My mission for this website is to be your go-to place to find for authentic Mauritian recipes and Mauritian food-related resources like where to buy the ingredients and tools to make recipes taste just like those of home.

This blog is brand new so I appreciate your patience and know that I’ll be very frequently updating it.

    SHORT-TERM GOALS

    • Provide tried and tested, tasty recipes that will transport you to Mauritius.
    • Provide detailed explanations with pictures, tips and notes to ensure your meals come right and perfect on first try.
    • Have a comprehensive glossary and translation list that I will update often.
