Ki manière? “Ki manière” means “how are you?” in our Mauritian dialect, créole!
I’m Eliette and welcome to my little corner on the web: Mauritian Street Food. This website is new but it was a long time in the making. Here you’ll find tried-and-tested, authentic Mauritian recipes with a focus on nostalgic Street Food, which is my ultimate favorite food, right next to that of my maternal Popo’s (Grandma’s) cooking. You’ll notice that I’ll mention her a lot because, to me, she was the key ingredient in my being so discerning about food from an early age.
I don’t often take shortcuts in my cooking. If a food is easy to come together, awesome. But if a meal was traditionally prepared with several steps over several days, this is the recipe version that I tend to make at home. That’s because I love eating authentic-tasting food even more than I love cooking so that becomes a big motivating factor for me!
I’ve watched Popo cook many times but haven’t really started cooking until when I went overseas to study. I guess I was spoiled by a talented and generous Grandma. Mauritian cuisine isn’t hard to recreate but you do need to learn a bit about the basic ingredients that locals find readily around the island (e.g.: a Mauritian cucumber or onion are not like the ones you would find in America) and be willing to practice cooking a recipe more than once. Sometimes, getting the right cooking tool is key to the success of a specific recipe. This is why, although my background has always been in the Food Industry in one way or another, Mauritian food wasn’t always easy for me to replicate until I took the time to truly learn what makes it so different and special.
You’ll find step-by-step recipes with lots of tips, tricks and notes that I hope you’ll find helpful. I made them as simple and easy to follow as possible and I promise to revisit a recipe if I learn something new down the line that makes it easier for you.
About Me
I’ve always had a love of food and hospitality so when it was time for college, I headed to Australia to earn my Bachelor in Hospitality and Restaurant Management at the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School. After Australia, I decided to complete an 18-months Food and Beverage Management Internship at the InterContinental Hotel in Cleveland, OH.
I currently work as a Personal Chef in Los Angeles. I specialize in creating menus for and cooking customized nourishing food for clients with allergies, food sensitivities, or other health constraints.
My love of travel has enabled me to enjoy a plethora of international and regional cuisines but to me, Mauritian cuisine, remains the BEST! I’m delighted to share my love of food with you and my hope is that when you cook and taste the recipes, you’re instantly transported to Mauritius.

THINGS THAT BRING ME JOY
When I’m not cooking, eating or reading about food, I love to … wait I’m always cooking, eating or reading about food. Well I love traveling and learning about new cultures! I’m fascinated with what people in other cultures normally eat, especially if the food isn’t widely accepted outside of said cultures. Hence, I love the TV Show Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern.
