A bit about my experience
Hi, I’m Eliette. I was born on the island of Mauritius, and I’m now residing in the United States. I studied Hotel and Restaurant Management in Australia. I have over 20 years of experience working in 5 star hotels and restaurants in Mauritius, Australia, and America. I hope you find this list helpful and congratulations on your wedding!
Brief introduction on Mauritius and its people
Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the most romantic hotels in Mauritius, let’s go through a crash course on the country and its people. Located 1130 kilometers (700 miles) east of Madagascar, Mauritius is a tiny volcanic island barely 65 km long (40 miles).
The island is surrounded by endless stretches of white sand beaches and natural flora and fauna. Our capital Port-Louis is located Northwest of the country.
Long known as paradise or heaven on earth, Mauritius (île maurice in French) gained this reputation not just thanks to its natural beauty, tropical climate, or magnificent resorts, but also because of its people.
The people of Mauritius
Mauritians are known to be warm and hospitable. Comprised primarily of people of Indian heritage, we are a mix of Indian, Muslim, Chinese, Caucasian, and Créole.
The official language is English but most people primarily speak French or Créole. However, if English is your only language, you won’t have any issue communicating with the locals, especially in popular touristic areas.
We have a tendency to go out of our way to help someone, so rest assured that you’ll be greeted with kind and sincere hospitality.
The 11 most romantic honeymoon resorts in Mauritius
Thank you for considering our beautiful island to celebrate your union! Below is a list of my finest picks for honeymoon resorts. I’ve included both premium choices and some more affordable options. I’ve also sprinkled in some adults-only resorts.
Don’t forget to check out the bonus accommodation towards the end, which is outside of the box!
Ranking method
While the honeymoon resorts on this list are all top notch, they aren’t necessarily the most opulent hotels that Mauritius has to offer. I focused on the most romantic picks with idyllic settings, fun packages for couples, and where the hotel staff goes the extra mile (or kilometer!) to make this the most romantic stay of your life.
1. Shangri-La Le Touessrok

It boasts 5 restaurants, 3 bars and has exclusive access to Ilot Mangénie island. Guests at the hotel get complimentary entry to their 2 championship golf courses.
Its gorgeous outdoor bathroom is also worth mentioning!

Overview
Tamassa means festive in Hindi but, in Mauritius, it loosely translates to “fun”, or “having fun”, usually in a group setting. With 68% of the population being of Indian origin, it’s no wonder that our Créole dialect would contain Hindi words!
Tamassa Bel Ombre is a 4-star and all-inclusive hotel with allergy-free rooms. Surrounded by tall coconut palms, the Tamassa Resort is a top pick for honeymoon couples because it masterfully combines fun with romance and a brush of luxury.
The property has three spectacular swimming pools to choose from.

Private Island Access
Just like Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Tamassa Bel Ombre gives you exclusive access to its private island. It does come with a price tag of €69 but if your partner and you are into sports and adventure, you’ll have an extensive selection of beach activities to pick from that makes the price tag worth it.
If you love sea creatures, you’ll have an opportunity to snorkel in a protected marine reserve with tropical fish and corals.
If you would much rather relax and kick your feet up with some tasty food, you’ll be pleased to know that they offer a typical Mauritian seafood barbecue with local Créole flavors, along with a wide selection of rhum arrangés (Mauritius’ spice or fruit infused local rum).

BONUS! Otentik Eco Tent
Otentic Eco Tent wouldn’t be considered a romantic destination in the traditional definition of the word, and it is not a resort. But I wanted to include this bonus option for couples who are avid outdoor enthusiasts, or backpackers, who want to experience something truly unique and unconventional to celebrate their union.
In fact otentic means “authentic” in Mauritian Créole and that’s exactly what this place offers: an authentic Mauritian experience, in a traditional setting, and it doesn’t get much more intimate than that.
The Tents (Lodge)
Look at it as upscale camping (or glamping). You’ll have your very own eco tent or eco lodge that comes with its own bathroom. The property is located in the small village of Deux Frères, in the east of Mauritius.
Otentic has a total of 12 tents by the riverbank and are mounted on stilts of one to two meters above the ground. Feel what it’s like to be completely disconnected from everything, and in the middle of nature.
Dining: An immersive Mauritian experience
If you want to completely immerse yourself in Mauritian cuisine and hang out with the locals, there truly is no better place than Otentic.
The owner, Julien, thought of every detail to make your stay memorable, and that includes hiring locals from the area to work on the premises and cook home-style Mauritian food, think like grandma used to make, a Mauritian grandma that is!
This gives you the opportunity to literally imbue in local Mauritian hospitality at its truest.
Menu items include local specialties like Créole sausage rougaille, vindaye, and achard. You might be most excited to learn that they have a rum bar that you can enjoy throughout your evening.
Activities
Otentic gives you access to many nature hikes and off-road bike trips in sugar cane fields and nearby mountains. They’ve also got water sports lovers covered with river and ocean kayaking, stand-up paddling, and kite surfing.
Every morning their free pirogue (canoe) will take you to the Île aux Cerfs and you’ll get there before anyone else.
If water sports is not your cup of tea, you can have a go at archery. Or why not join the skilled cooks there? They’ll give you a little demo of true Mauritian cookery!
There are too many exciting activities to mention, so be sure to check them all out. They recommend an least 3 nights stay to fully enjoy all the sports and activities they have to offer.
Why did Otentic Eco Tent Mauritius make the list
If your new spouse and you love the outdoors and prefer camping over elegant spas, staying at Otentic will be a dream honeymoon holiday.
You’ll be intimately close to nature and mix in with the locals. The atmosphere here is incredible relaxed, serene, and above all undeniable Mauritian.
Julien is very involved in the day-to-day activities and if you have a special request to make your adventurous honeymoon extra romantic, just send him a message. You won’t be disappointed here. Think of it as luxury camping with heart.

Honeymoon Resorts in Mauritius: Best time of the year to visit
Mauritius has only two seasons: summer and winter. Don’t be too concerned with 6 months of winter because it won’t be that cold on our tropical island. July is usually the coolest month of the year with an average temperature of 20°C (68°F).
The best times to visit Mauritius are from April to June or from September to December to avoid the peak of summer and winter.
I don’t recommend visiting in January because of the high chance of encountering a cyclone. This could ruin your whole holiday and even result in canceled flights. This year (2024) alone, we had two cyclones in January and one of them, cyclone Belal, caused a lot of damage. Avoid January if possible!
What to pack for your trip to Mauritius
Need we say it? Your best swimsuits, sunglasses, and sunscreen! As it is a tropical island, you’ll be very comfortable without a winter coats in the colder months but it’s always recommended to bring a light sweater and long pants for the evening.
We do have micro climates and high hills on the island, so you might need something to keep you warm if you tend to get chilly.
Don’t forget some casual shoes, sandals (flip flops), and a sun hat. You might need an umbrella, but you can purchase it on the island if the need rises.
Last but not least, make sure to keep your passport and travel documents handy. You might it need them at various duty-free shops across the island.
